Off-duty police officer killed in Khayelitsha

Western Cape police are investigating a case of murder after a police officer was shot and killed in Khayelitsha on Sunday. This is the second incident within three months where an off-duty officer was killed in the area.

It is understood that the 37-year-old police sergeant, who was off-duty at the time, was visiting a friend in Site B.

“Preliminary information suggests the member visited a friend [at 21:45 in Cwayi Street, Site B, Khayelitsha], with whom he was seated in his car when two unknown gunmen disembarked a Toyota Quantum that stopped alongside them,” said Police spokesperson Malcolm Pojie Pojie.

‘’The men opened fire and hit both occupants of the car several times,” he added.

The sergeant, stationed at Bellville South, sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene. His friend was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Anyone with information regarding the incident are urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
