Western Cape police arrest two for illicit cigarettes worth millions

Police arrested two suspects for the possession of illicit cigarettes worth 22-million rand on the N1 highway in the Western Cape on Sunday.

The cigarettes were hidden in a truck that was travelling from Johannesburg to Cape Town.

Members of the Anti-Economical Infrastructure Task Team and Provincial Extortion Task Team intercepted the truck at the Joostenberg weigh bridge.

Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, says the truck was searched and the cigarettes were found.

“After further investigation the large consignment of illicit cigarettes was destined for a warehouse in Montagu Gardens,” said police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk.

“Border police and customs verified the illicit goods and two men aged 34 and 62 were arrested and detained at Klapmuts Police Station on charges of possession and the transport of illicit goods.”

They are expected to make a court appearance at Paarl Magistrates’ Court once charged, he said.
