Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Safety & Security, JP Smith, said patrols will increase around recreational spaces, as well as in the CBD, to keep an eye on the end of school celebrations.

"Apart from the post-exam celebrations, it's month end, but also the start of the festive season, and the weather forecast suggests it's going to be quite hot. So we are likely going to see a very busy weekend at our recreational spaces, but also around shopping areas, at party spots and of course on the roads."

"To our young people, we do not want to rob you of the opportunity to let your hair down after a long academic career, but our appeal is that you celebrate responsibly. The end of the school year is worth celebrating, but safety should be a priority for all," added JP Smith, MMC for Safety and Security.

Beaches in the metro have also become popular spots for celebrations.

MMC for Community Services & Health, Patricia van der Ross, reminded bathers that alcohol is not allowed and if beachgoers do take it with, it will not only be confiscated, but you will receive a R500 fine as well.

"We want our beaches to be places where beautiful memories are made, particularly in the context of post-exam celebrations. However, we ask that visitors be mindful of their behaviour, and how their actions could potentially impact themselves or others. Last weekend, we had two non-fatal drowning incidents. It was a timely reminder of just how careful everyone needs to be around water bodies. So, as we wade into the holiday season, leave the alcohol at home, supervise your children at all times, swim only in designated areas, and please, listen to the instructions of our lifeguards."
