Sunday marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities, and this day aims to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities at every level of society and to raise awareness of the situation and conditions of people with disabilities in all aspects of social, economic and cultural life.
This year’s theme: “United in action to rescue and achieve
the Sustainable Development Goals for, with, and by persons with disabilities”.
Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Dr.
Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma will on Sunday join the Gauteng Government and Special
Olympics Committee, including organisations of and for people with disabilities
and South Africa, to observe and commemorate National Day of persons with
disabilities.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape’s Social Development MEC,
Sharna Fernandez, highlighted that Disability Rights Awareness Month, which
concludes on Sunday, coincides with the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence
Against Women and Children.
‘’So we do not forget persons with disabilities in our call
for an end to violence and abuse. We should be creating more inclusive spaces
where these individuals can also share their trauma and receive the same
support services so that they may start their healing journey. More work needs
to be done on this front. We need the support of the private sector in joining
hands with government, NGOs and communities in accelerating the rights of
persons with disabilities.’’
