Alleged SAPS officer victim of smash and grab incident on Jakes Gerwel Drive

A woman in her forties hopes police can arrest a suspect and retrieve her handbag after she was a victim of a smash and grab incident on Jakes Gerwel Drive, near Bonteheuwel, in the direction of the N2 highway on Thursday.

SUPPLIED - Sub council 15 chairperson, Angus McKenzie

‘’ The circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation… When the vehicle was static at the traffic intersection at the corners of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue in Bonteheuwel, an unidentified man smashed the window of the motor vehicle and grabbed a bag from inside the vehicle. He then fled the scene into the nearby shacks,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi.

‘’Bishop Lavis Police members are pursuing all available information at their disposal in a bid to ensure a breakthrough. Bishop Lavis SAPS are investigating a case of theft out of motor vehicle,’’ he added.

Meanwhile, Sub council 15 chairperson, Angus McKenzie, alleges that the victim was a senior police official stationed at Manenberg police station. He further alleges that her service pistol was in the bag and subsequently stolen.

‘’I am appealing to Langa SAPS officials not to leave any stone unturned in one retrieving the firearm, two bringing the criminals to book and lastly, for the sake of all commuters making use of the road to police these intersections.’’

‘’It is clear to us that all the incidents of smash and grab activities at this intersection are being done by people from Langa, who use the informal settlement as a getaway,’’ he added.

Mckenzie pleaded with officials to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.

‘’This activity can not be allowed to continue, and we desperately plea with Langa SAPS to sort this out and for the very community who are being tarnished by these criminals to stand up against these individuals. This must stop! And it must stop now!’’ said Angus McKenzie, Sub council 15 chairperson.
