More than 50 homes destroyed in KTC informal settlement fire

More than 50 homes were destroyed in a fire that broke out on Friday afternoon, in the KTC informal settlement in Nyanga.

At one stage, dozens of firefighters using fifteen fire engines battled the blaze which was fanned by gale force winds

‘’At around 3pm, numerous calls were received of informal structures alight in KTC Informal Settlement in Nyanga. More than 15 firefighting resources and 70+ staff members are currently battling this blaze that is being fanned by extremely strong winds,’’ said Jermaine Carelse, City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson.

‘’This large scale incident necessitated the activation of an Incident Management Team type 4 to assist in overall co-ordination of firefighting efforts,’’ he added.

The fire was extinguish early evening, and no fatalities or injuries were reported.

‘’The fire was extinguished at approximately 18:25. Initial estimates are that 51 structures were destroyed. The number of affected persons has yet to be determined.  The cause of the fire is unknown,’’ said Carelse.
