Gcinithemba Beja and Fundile Maseti from The Guptas gang were found guilty on seven counts of murder, three attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition charges following a shooting at a tavern in Site B, Khayelitsha

On 8 March 2020, police officers responded to a crime scene in Site B, Khayelitsha, where seven people sustained multiple gunshots and were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. Three victims, including a six year old child were transported to nearby hospital for medical treatment.

It is all thanks to Warrant Officer Zinele Ngqola, who ensured that the duo got their day.

‘’The investigating officer assigned to the investigation, obtained statements from the victims and intensified the investigation in search for those responsible for this mass murder. A statement was obtained from an independent eye witness, who placed the suspects on the scene. His persistence led to the arrest of two males aged 29 and 45 Owing to the sensitive nature of the investigation one of the witnesses was placed in a witness protection program,’’ said Warrant Offcier Joseph Swartbooi.

‘’Because of the meticulous investigation conducted by Warrant Officer Zinele Ngqola , a well prepared case could be presented to the court. Several witnesses were called to testify who faced numerous questions from the defence lawyer. The investigating officer faced a gruelling onslaught form the defence lawyer who went the extra mile in a bid to sow doubt. He stood his ground and stated the facts as presented to the court, not allowing him to be derailed. Warrant Officer Zinele Ngqola was praised as a credible witness,’’ he added.

Patekile commended the investigating officer for his sterling investigation and the National Prosecuting Authority for ensuring that both accused received the maximum sentence for their devious acts.
