Extra Police Officers at 49 “high-risk” Voting Stations in Western Cape

Forty-nine voting stations have been labeled as high-risk in the Western Cape. This was revealed by provincial police commissioner, Thembisile Patekile, during an operational parade in Belhar on Thursday, where the South African Police Service (SAPS) outlined its security state of readiness to police the 2024 general elections.

Out of the 1 572 voting stations in the province, 475 are categorized as medium risk. Patekile said that on Election Day, each high-risk station would have a minimum of six police officers to ensure everyone's safety.

Specific locations were not revealed, but it was emphasized that not all high-risk voting stations are in certain areas, such as the Cape Flats, but are spread throughout the province.

He added that to ensure a safe election process, a significant number of police officers will be on duty throughout the voting week.

"SAPS in the Western Cape Province [are] ready to police the SAelections24, and ensure the safety of our citizens as they are preparing to cast their votes next week", said Lt Gen (Adv.) TE Patekile, Western Cape Police Commissioner.

Echoing his words, the Western Cape’s Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Reagen Allen, also addressed the parade and said that the coming elections will be free and fair from disruptions and policed effectively.

‘’Election Day on 29 May 2024 signifies how far our democracy has come. Critical to the day is the opportunity we all have to make our voices heard through the mark of a pen. Many sacrifices were made for us to have this opportunity. It is extremely important that we have a peaceful and nonviolent election. No intimidation, interruption, interference or any unlawful attempts to hamper the election will be allowed. The South African Police Service and relevant law enforcement authorities have all the relevant measures, systems and mechanisms in place to ensure all voters are protected on this important day.’’

‘’I urge political parties, its leaders and members, along with the public at large to commemorate and celebrate this day, and not under any circumstances seek to disrupt proceedings. This is an historic day which will set the tone for the next five years. Let’s be heard and seen through our vote!,’’ added Allen.
