ANC’s Zizi Kodwa Steps Aside Amid Corruption Charges

The ANC has welcomed the decision of Zizi Kodwa to step aside from his roles within the party following serious corruption allegations. Kodwa, accused of state capture-related corruption, resigned from both the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Working Committee (NWC) on Thursday morning.

Kodwa, the former Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister, is charged with accepting bribes in exchange for multi-million-rand government contracts between 2015 and 2016. His resignation comes shortly after his appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday. Despite stepping down, Kodwa has emphasised that his actions are not an admission of guilt but a compliance with the ANC’s step-aside rule, which mandates members charged with serious crimes to step down from their positions.

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula lauded Kodwa's adherence to the party's constitution, stating, "Zizi has stepped aside to address the issues he is facing voluntarily, informed by the policy of the ANC. He was not forced, and to that, we are very much grateful."

Kodwa’s resignation adds to the growing list of ANC members who have honoured the party’s step-aside rule amidst ongoing corruption probes. More than 20 officials implicated in the state capture commission are still to face legal proceedings.
