Community activists to hold meeting on ongoing violence on the Cape Flats

Nearly 200 people were killed or injured over the past three weeks across the Western Cape, as gang-related violence ravages communities especially on the Cape Flats.

According to the newspaper, Die Burger, about 120 people were murdered in one week across hotspot areas including Nyanga, Ottery, Bishop Lavis, Mitchell’s Plain, Manenberg, Khayelitsha, Ocean View, Kleinvlei, Atlantis, and many more.

A group of civil society organisations, and Community Policing Forums under the banner 'Cape Crime Crisis Coalition', will hold a virtual meeting on Tuesday to address the ongoing violent, gun and gang-related crimes in Western Cape.

‘’Our communities have had enough. How long must we continue to live like animals at the mercy of gangsters who have no respect for the lives of women, children and the elderly? Today, we as community representatives, CPF members, Neighbourhood Watch members and civil society organisations pledge to mobilise all the people on the Cape Flats to defend our own safety,’’ said Llewellyn MacMaster, the Cape Crime Crisis Coalition Chairperson.

‘’We call on the State to prepare for community action in the next few weeks as a result of their impotence to deal with the problem. We call on the police to listen to our collective demands which we will formulate at a Community Dialogue. We do not want any government official or City official present… Too much is at stake, and we owe it to our people and communities to step forward as leaders whose main priority must be the safety of our communities,’’ added MacMaster.
