The International Health Regulations (IHR), National Focal Point (NFP) of the Republic of South Africa, notified WHO of 20 confirmed m-pox cases between 8 May and 2 July 2024, including three deaths.
These cases were reported in three of nine provinces
According to WHO (World Health Organisation) ,these are the first
cases of m-pox reported in South Africa since 2022 when the country had reported
five cases, none of which were severe, and no deaths.
It has been 26 days
since the last m-pox case was reported, and now more cases have been confirmed.
A 36-year-old man was admitted
to a health facility early July in KZN followed by the 20-year old from Gauteng
on Friday 2 August, 2024.
He
confirmed that he has international travel history to Peru in South America. It
is uncertain if exposure occurred in Peru or South Africa
World Health
Organisaion said Peru
is amongst countries with high numbers of positive cases in the region of the
Americas.
The
Department said contact tracing and monitoring activities are ongoing in the
affected communities in both provinces.
However, the department confirmed another
arrival of another batch of Tecovirimat, also known as TPOXX donated by the
World Health Organization.
