Two suspects involved in last week’s foiled cash-in-transit heist, in Khayelitsha, appeared in the local magistrates court on Thursday.
24-year-old, Sihle Mabhongo, and 46-year-old Simphiwe Mzanya,
were re-arrested by the Hawks on Monday, after the case against five suspects
were struck off the court roll as police brought the suspects to court later
than the prescribed 48 hour period.
The duo face charges of possession of illegal firearms, explosives, and attempted murder. They had appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
‘’Mzanywa appeared briefly at the Khayelitsha Magistrates
Court on 13 August 2024. It was further established that he is currently on
parole on another matter where he was arrested during 2022 and released in
2023. Mabhongo is currently in hospital under police guard,’’ said Lieutenant
Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi, Hawks spokesperson in the Western Cape.
The pair will reappear in court on 28 August 2024 after the
matter was postponed for formal bail application.
‘’Both accused are remanded in custody. Mzanywa' s parole
has been revoked and Mabhongo has a pending case at Khayelitsha Court for possession of unlicensed firearm,’’ said
Vukubi.
