Four teenagers killed in seperate incidents in suspected gang violence in Mitchell's Plain

The number of teenage boys killed in suspected gang violence in Mitchell's Plain has risen to three. The boys had allegedly been ambushed by unknown gunmen while sitting on a park in Rocklands on Friday night.

Two boys, aged 15 and 17, died on the scene, whilst a third died in hospital. 3 others, including a woman, were wounded.

‘’Mitchells Plain SAPS members were dispatched to a shooting scene at a park situated in Bosduif Street in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain at about 19:40 on Friday, 23 August 2024. Preliminary information suggest that unknown gunmen opened fire on another group of young people in the park. Two boys aged 15 and 17 were fatally shot and died on scene while three other males and a female, all between the ages 15 and 20, were transported to medical facilities with bullet wounds,’’ said Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

Providing an update on Saturday afternoon, Pojie confirmed that a third victim, a 15 year old male, who were treated in hospital, succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained, on Friday night

‘’The charges will now change to three for murder and three counts of attempted murder,’’ said Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

The motive is believed to be gang related. No arrests have been made yet.

In an unrelated incident, and a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot in Biljaaart Street, Beacon Valley, Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday.

‘’Mitchells Plain police opened a murder docket for further investigation following a shooting incident... at about 23:25 in Biljaaart Street, Beacon Valley in Mitchells Plain. Preliminary information suggest that the members were dispatched to the scene and found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds, laying in the street. Medical personnel who attended to the scene declared him as deceased,’’ said Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, Western Cape police spokesperson.

He says the motive and the identity of the suspect(s) are yet to be established.

The Cape Flats Safety Forum has called on police to activate its 72-hour plan to find the perpetrators.

‘’The Cape Flats Safety Forum condemns the attacks. Once again, it places the motion of is there a clear intelligence programme. Is there a clear strategy to deal with urban terror on the Cape Flats. We will continue to call for a special probe to be set up of gun violence and urban terror on the Cape Flats,’’ said Abie Isaacs, Cape Flats Safety Forum chairperson.
