No end to child murders on the Cape Flats

There’s just no end to child murders on the Cape Flats.

In the latest incident, a 15-year-old girl was shot and killed in Tafelsig, Mitchell’s Plain, on Wednesday night. She and a 24-year-old man were fatally wounded in Bainskloof street. The duo was with two other males, aged 16 and 23, who survived the incident.

‘’Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. The 24 and 15-year-old victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel while the other victims were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. According to reports unknown suspects approached the victims on foot and started shooting at them before fleeing the scene. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation,’’ said Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Western Cape police spokesperson.

Meanwhile, police are yet to make arrests regarding a 17-year-old learner who was shot and killed in Khayelitsha. The teenager was on his way home from school on Tuesday.

‘’Khayelitsha police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting incident on Tuesday, 20 August 2024, in which a 17-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and head and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The suspect fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. Khayelitsha detectives are investigating a murder case and are following up all leads in order to make a breakthrough in the case,’’ said Twigg.

Then three teenagers, injured in a mass shooting in Hanover Park over the weekend, are still in a critical condition in hospital. This as unknown gunmen opened fire in Galilee Walk on Saturday.

The Cape Flats Safety Forum’s Abie Isaacs condemned the incident.

‘’We condemned these acts of violence in the strongest terms. We call on the authorities to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the suspects. We also call on the community to also assist the law enforcement agencies in tracking down the alleged suspects.’’
