Three learners from Summerdale High School in Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain, will face disciplinary action, after a video went viral of two learners fighting in a classroom.
In it, a learner can be heard encouraging the two boys to fight, where a learner in a black top can be seen throwing the first punch and a fight ensues. Female learners can also be heard in the video encouraging the unruly behaviour. An educator then steps into the classroom and the 34-second video ends.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) confirmed the incident saying it is aware of the video.
‘’The school immediately made contact with the
parents of both learners involved. The school will start with the disciplinary
process. The learner who filmed the incident and distributed its contents will
also face disciplinary action,’’ said Unathi Booi, WCED Assistant Director:
Digital Media & Communications Support.
In an unrelated matter, and two learners who
attend Plumstead High School have been suspended after a photo of the boys went
viral of them holding and pointing a gun, a knife, and a alcohol while in their
school uniform.
‘’I can confirm that an investigation is
underway. The school is dealing with the matter in terms of its code of
conduct. The school has met with the parents of the learners concerned
individually. The learners have been suspended as a precautionary measure
pending a disciplinary hearing. The district will provide the necessary support
to the school,’’ said Millicent Merton, WCED spokesperson.
