Abalone worth R10.3 million confiscated near Phillipi

Western Cape police seized abalone worth R10.3 million in an industrial area near Philippi.

The police spokesperson, Malcolm Pojie, says the officer received a tip about abalone being hidden in a mountain place. Three foreigners, a Chinese citizen and two Zimbabweans were arrested.

Pojie says one of the suspects who stood for the mountain place to try to flee when he spotted the police. However, he was caught and the other two were caught processing the abalone.

The police confiscated more than 16 600 pieces of abalone.

The suspects will appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court soon
