Athlone police apprehended suspects for possession of an firearm and ammunition

Police officers in Athlone arrested two suspects on charges of possession of an unlawful firearm, ammunition and reckless driving.

Officers swiftly responded to a complaint, which was in close proximity to the Magistrate’s court in Athlone on Tuesday.

According to the information, officers could gather, the armed suspects were involved in an altercation and after they fled the scene in a Toyota Quantum

Police officers surrounded the possible escape routes upon which they spotted the vehicle driving recklessly towards the Main Road and officers chased the suspects.

“The police members forced the driver of the Toyota Quantum to stop in Jan Smuts Drive, where one of the suspects tried to flee in a bid to evade arrest; they apprehended the man, searched him and confiscated a 9mm pistol with no serial number and ammunition,” said warrant officer, Joseph Swartbooi.

“The discovery led to the detention of a 41-year-old man for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. The driver of the motor vehicle was also arrested on a charge of reckless and negligent driving,” added Swartbooi.

The suspects will be expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate court on mentioned charges once charged.
