The City of Cape Town has stated that its initiative to install more cameras has led to an increase in arrests. The metro reported that the number of crime incidents detected by CCTV has risen from 22,000 last year to over 40,000 this year.
The municipality highlighted that technology has always been central to its efforts to combat crime in the Mother City. It plans to keep investing in technology to enhance resident safety.
Mzwakhe Nqavashe, chairperson of the Metro's safety and security portfolio committee, urged residents to report any criminal activities in their communities to the authorities.
He noted that this also demonstrates the
commitment of enforcement officers and the effectiveness of technology in
making Cape Town safer.
