Police in KwaZulu-Natal have seized copper
valued at around R20 million from a scrapyard in Queensburgh, south of Durban.
Most of this copper is thought to have been stolen from the eThekwini
Municipality.
Officers received a tip-off on Wednesday regarding
the sale of the copper. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda stated when they arrived
at the scrapyard, they found copper that appeared suspicious and engaged with
the relevant authorities.
So far, the eThekwini Municipality has
confirmed that this large quantity of copper, believed to be illegal, belongs
to them. He added that the scrapyard owner has been arrested.
A 59-year-old man, who claimed to be the
manager of the scrapyard, has been detained and will be charged and brought to
court after a thorough processing.
