Ten killed as bus veers off Vanrhyns Pass

Ten people have lost their lives after a bus carrying 39 people veered off Vanrhyns Pass, late Monday afternoon.

It is reported that the passengers on the bus were construction workers en-route to a wind farm project in Ceres, contrary to initial reports that suggested they were agri-workers.

The injured passengers were transported to a nearby hospital for further care and treatment for severe to minor injuries.

Police have taken over the incident to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Western Cape Social Development MEC, Jaco Londt said his department will work with SAPS and the Department of Health and Wellness to provide support such as trauma debriefing should it be required.

‘’Since many of the affected are from the Northern Cape, we are liaising with DSD colleagues in that province who will also continue to provide support services to the victims and their families and loved ones.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Rural Farmworkers Development Organisation, Billy Claasen, has called on the public not to share videos and pictures of the accident on social media.
