Man arrested for unlawful possession of abalone

A 21-year-old man was arrested yesterday for the being in possession of unlawful abalone worth a quarter of a million rand. Warrant Officer Joseph Swaartbooi said officers followed up on information about a vehicle transporting abalone from Hermanus.

According to Swaartbooi, the driver of the vehicle tried getting away.

“When the driver of the suspicious vehicle became aware of the of the presence of the police, he sped off with police members in pursuit. During the chase during the chase the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle. The members inspected the bags which was ejected from the vehicle and confiscated 4963 units of abalone with an estimated street value of R250 000” said Swaartbooi. 


The 21-year-old was arrested and s due to appear at the Paarl Magistrates’ court on the 14 October 2024 on the mentioned charge.
