5-year-old amongst three people wounded in Manenberg

Gun violence continues to threaten residents in Manenberg. Innocent bystanders were wounded in a shooting incident in Irvine Street on Monday evening.

Three people were injured. One of them was a five-year-old boy.

‘’Manenberg police registered three counts of attempted murder, following a shooting incident on Monday, 2025-01-06 at about 18:45 in Irvine Street Manenberg, where two women aged 31 and 54 and a five year old boy were shot and wounded,’’ said Captain F.C Van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

‘’According to reports the two women were sitting in front of the mentioned address and the five year old boy was walking with his father towards a nearby tuckshop, when they were caught between crossfire hitting the boy in the head and the women in the thigh and lower back respectively, by stray bullets,’’ he added.

Police suspects that the motive for the attack could be gang related. The suspects fled on foot and no arrests has been made.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has condemned the incident.

‘’The City is ready to assist the SAPS investigation in any way possible, through not only our officers on the ground, but also our safety technology investments in Manenberg and broader precincts, including gunshot detection tech. It can never be acceptable that children are not able to walk safely to a local tuckshop with a parent, and people should not live in daily fear of crime in their neighbourhoods. This is why it is our goal to do everything possible to help SAPS fight gang, gun and drug crime in particular.’’

‘’I have been in touch with some residents of Manenberg who have sent information on this matter, which I have reported to the relevant Metro Police officers and our SSIU for them to also share with SAPS. I am grateful for their courage in being willing to speak up and can give them confidence that their identities will not be revealed. The City is able to assist SAPS in investigations like this and others when given the opportunity, given our investments in various safety technologies, such as gunshot detection in the Manenberg area and others, CCTV, Automatic Number Plate Recognition, and eye-in-the-sky aerial surveillance. Through these investments, the City is able to recover hundreds of illegal firearms annually and support SAPS investigations to gain convictions,’’ said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting incident is kindly requested to contact Manenberg SAPS 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop 08600 10111.
