The case against a man who allegedly killed his girlfriend from Kraaifontein, has been postponed to next week.
Jonathan Geswindt allegedly killed 25-year-old Shana Balie
and buried her in a shallow grave in the backyard of his rented shack in
Kraaifontein on Boxing Day.
The State alleges that Geswindt assaulted and strangled
Balie before burying her in a shallow grave. The accused remains in custody,
with the case postponed to Friday, 17 January 2025, for a formal bail
application.
The State has expressed its intention to oppose bail,
citing a history of domestic violence, the seriousness of the offense, and
threats allegedly made by the accused’s family toward the deceased’s relatives.
The minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth, and
Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, attended the court case at the
Bleu Down’s Magistrates Court on Thursday and addressed the media after
proceedings
‘’Gender-based violence (GBV) can’t be a norm in South
Africa. Life doesn’t depend on men and women and relationships. There is life
without a relationship; that is why people who are widowed are still able to
live,” the minister said.
“We cannot be a country that is known for violence. We can
do better. It is worse during holidays because people who are supposed to be
happy and loving are fighting all the way,”
“Abuse is wrong. Where it comes from, men or women. We must
act decisively to address not only the immediate instances of GBVF but also the
structural, cultural, and systemic factors that perpetuate violence against
women and girls. Our efforts must be centred on empowering women and fostering
a society free from all forms of gender-based violence.” she said.
