Deputy minister Paul Mashatile addressed the Annual NEDLAC Organised Labour School on Tuesday.
Convened under the theme “building unity of workers to defend labour rights and advanced decent work for all”. The NEDLAC is held annually to take stock of the state’s labour market.
The minister said the
annual labour school remains an important form of reflecting of the year 2024.
Mashatile also highlighted the importance and role NEDLAC plays.
In the past few years South Africa has advanced in workers rights and enforcing diversity in companies including protecting the rights of workers. According to Mashatile the unemployment rate decreased from 33.5% to 32.1%. This was due to an increase in the number of employed people.
The minister says the country is not performing at its’ optimal best and needs to improve its’ economic growth. In the past suitable job opportunities were given to workers without any protection of rights and many workers were abused. Policies and laws were enforced to ensure workers human rights are protected.
Despite the labour laws
there are still a number of socio-economic issues that workers face.
The minister concluded
to say workers rights will always be protected.
