A 32-year-old constable, Ayanda Moyikwa was killed after he witnessed a robbery in Mfuleni, Sunday morning.
The member was waiting for his
colleague when he witnessed the robbery and upon allegedly attempting to
respond to the robbery, the suspects instead fatally shot him.
“At around 05:30 the victim
who was on his way to report for duty at the Cape Town International Airport
was waiting for a colleague in Gcuwa Street Mfuleni in his private vehicle when
he was approached by two unknown assailants according to eyewitness accounts,
and shot. The victim who was unarmed at the time of the incident was robbed of
his cellular telephone,” said Andre Traut, Western Cape Police spokesperson.
The police force is positive
that the two suspects identified by eyewitnesses will soon be brought to
justice along with an appeal made to the public to come forward with any
information regarding the case. DPCI detectives will head the investigations.
The police force has expressed
about police killing on duty, nationally constable Ayanda Moyikwa is the fifth
victim killed answering the call of duty.
Western Cape Police Commissioner
Thembinkosi Patekile said it is concerning that; young constables are
tragically losing their lives, when they are suppose to be taking over the
fight against crime.
