Parents has voiced their frustration regarding learner
placement in the Western Cape.
A learner placement meeting, organised by the Mitchells Plain Community Advice Development, was held at the Portland Indoor Centre, on Wednesday.
The latest figures from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) show that about 2 500 learners still needed to be placed.
''My kind is nou 10 jaar (oud).Sy sĂȘ vir my mammie I want to be educated, and I want to be this and that in life, so I will do whatever means to get her in a school,’’ said a frustrated parent.
‘’They want your child to write an aptitude test. Why!? Nou
help ons vir hulle met onse suffering, ons comply met al die online goetes.
Hulle nie eers fiber of Wi-Fi om online te gaan nie. Hulle weet nie as ons geld
het om online te gaan nie. Hulle care nie!,’’ said Danny Rass, a resident of
Portland.
‘’Ek het Eastridge toe getrek na my niggie. My hart is so
seer. Sy het geapply die nag toe applications oop gegaan het. Sy het nie plek
gekry nie. She was put on a waiting list, still waiting. My kinders is so
excited, hulle het skoolklere en alles, but they can’t get into a school,’’
said another concerned parent.
The WCED was not in attendance. Bush Radio News reached out
to the Education department who cited short notice for their absence.
‘’We were aware of the meeting by the legal practice. We
did try to get admission staff to attend the meeting, but it was short notice
which means retasking helping parents from our district office. Our officials have
asked to be directed to district office which is the appropriate channel for
queries,’’ said Bronagh Hammond, WCED spokesperson.
‘’Our officials asked details of parents who are having
difficulty with their queries with the district office so our officials can contact
them directly and assist them. The legal practice did not provide details as
yet,’’ she added.
