Residents in Khayelitsha protest over 'illegal connection'

Residents in Social Distance informal settlement in Khayelitsha exercised their right to protest on Friday morning.

They are demanding clean water, electricity and proper sanitation. Residents claim they have been ignored for years This follows an Eskom operation earlier this week, supported by law enforcement, to remove illegal electricity connection.

Motorists had to detour on Wednesday and Thursday as Mew Wey were blocked on Pama Road.

“Lingelethu West Police responded on Wednesday. Upon arrival on Mew Way, they found a group of disgruntled community members staging a protest. The community members used burning tyres to block the road. Police reinforcements were dispatched to the area. The community dispersed peacefully. It was not necessary in any way to use action,’’ said Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Western Cape police spokesperson.
