Non-profit organisation, Ilitha Labantu, on Thursday launched its Freedom Month Awareness Campaign, in Hout Bay. The month long campaign aims to promote community safety, raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV), and advocate for equal rights and justice for women and vulnerable groups.
Spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali recently spoke to Bush
Radio’s Sakhisizwe Programme, and highlights the theme "Building Safer
Communities, Advancing Equal Rights & Justice for Women from All Walks of
Life,"
‘’The sad part is that issues relating to Gender-Based
Violence and Femicide (GBVF) only come to the fold when a lot of noise is being
made, but GBV affects our communities 365 days a year. The beauty of this collaboration
is we collaborated with South African Police Service (SAPS), Department of
Social Development, Department of Home Affairs, Law Enforcement, Civil Society
Organizations & Community Leaders, to try and bridge the gap between all
the service providers and ensure that Imizamo Yethu residents have access to
the services at their disposal. We are aiming to have an ongoing engagement beyond
Freedom Month, with these services and the community who is ravaged by may
societal challenges like GBV, inequality and systematic neglect.’’
Monakali says the aim of the sessions is to educational
sessions on GBV, human rights, and access to justice; Stakeholder engagement
with law enforcement, government departments, and advocacy groups; Information
booths providing legal assistance, psychosocial support, and public services; Public
dialogue on community-driven safety initiatives and accountability measures.
‘’Ilitha Labantu and Community Cohesion believe that
eradicating gender-based violence requires collective action. We urge all
stakeholders, community members, and the media to join us in this crucial
initiative to build safer and more just communities,’’ said Siyabulela Monakali,
’Ilitha Labantu spokesperson.
