The Easter long weekend brings joy and celebration for many, but it is also a time of heightened domestic violence and abuse. Public holidays can be dangerous for women and children trapped at home with their perpetrators.
According to the latest crime statistics - October to
December 2024 - nearly 8 700 domestic violence cases were reported in the
Western Cape, an average of over 90 cases per day.
Western Cape Provincial Legislature Chairperson on Social
Development Wendy Kaizer-Philander urged citizens to remain vigilant
‘’ These are not random acts of violence; they happen
in homes, in spaces meant to be safe. This cannot continue. in stark contrast
of the season and our reflective period, this awareness and amplifying the
reality in our communities, are crucial.’’
“If something does
not look or feel right, don’t ignore it. Don’t wait for it to become tomorrow’s
headline. Whether you're in Mfuleni, Khayelitsha, Paarl, Prince Albert, or any
other community across the province — these issues matter. Every voice matters.
Every life matters. This Easter, we urge every citizen - parents, partners,
neighbours, faith leaders, and community champions - to remain vigilant. Speak
out. Intervene. Protect those around you.’’
‘’Let this Easter be about more than celebration. Let it be
about action. Let us look out for one another, ensure no one is left behind,
and commit to making our homes and communities truly safe. Together, we can
make this Easter count-for all the right reasons,’’ added Kaizer-Philander
