It was all smiles at a school in Mfuleni after learners received sanitary towels, shoes, and stationery, yesterday.
National Assembly Speaker,
Thoko Didiza, donated one hundred packs of the basic need items to Manzomthombo
Secondary School
The school reached out to
Didiza as learners from impoverished communities lacked access to basic
sanitary products, as well basic school items
Research has shown that over a
third of girls in South Africa miss up to a week of school each month due to
limited access to menstrual products and hygiene facilities.
“As part of my outreach work
as the speaker of the national assembly as well as the member of the ANC, I felt
as if this is something worth considering. We looked at sponsorships that could
assist us. We also went further to look
at addressing challenges that girl children face in school particularly with
sanitary towels. And also some of the learners who may not have” said Didiza.
The school’s governing body
expressed gratitude towards the donation.
“Thank you so much from Mrs.
Didiza and chairperson who made sure that they support those learners from the disadvantaged
areas, because this is one of those schools which is in disadvantaged areas”
SGB member, Mrs Bantele.
