A 40-year-old suspect will on Thursday appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court after he was caught with about R18 millions of drugs, amongst others.
Police said officers arrested the suspect on Tuesday after
officers followed up on information and found drugs at a storage facility in
Roeland Street. The suspect was also found in possession of a number of
ammunition as well as an AK47 rifle.
‘’Armed with intelligence about drugs and firearms being
stored at the mentioned address, the members operationalised the information
and pounced on the self-storage facility where they found the suspect (male) at
one of the units. They conducted a search of the unit upon which they
discovered 15 bricks of cocaine of about 15 kilograms (1kg each) with an
estimated street value of R18 million as well as one AK 47 rifle, an Uzzi, five
9mm pistols and an assortment of ammunition,’’ said Captain
F.C. Van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.
The suspect faces charges for the unlawful possession of
firearms and ammunition and dealing in drugs.
Western Cape police commissioner, Lt. Gen. (Adv.) T.E
Patekile praised the integrated effort which led to the discovery of the drugs
and firearms which in the wrong hands, could cause havoc in communities where
gang and gun violence are prevalent.
“SAPS remains resolute to eradicate drug abuse and the
prevalence of firearms which poses a threat to the safety of communities in the
Western Cape”, said Lt. Gen. (Adv.) T.E Patekile.
