What was meant to be a safe and nurturing environment for learning has instead become the center of disturbing allegations. A Grade 7 learner from Harvester Primary School in Mitchells Plain was allegedly sexually groomed by a female educator.
It is reported that the teacher allegedly sent the learner
explicit content. The mother of the boy
has since opened a criminal case against the teacher.
‘’ We can confirm that Lentegeur police opened a sexual
harassment case for further investigation following an incident that took place
on 26 May 2025 at a primary school in Westridge. No arrests have been made as
yet. The circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation,’’
said Captain F.C Van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.
Bush Radio News reached out to the Western Cape Education
Department (WCED) and stated that it has been made aware of the ‘’very serious and
disturbing allegations.’’
‘’An immediate investigation has been launched by the
department’s Labour Relations Directorate and the relevant counselling support
is being arranged for the learner concerned. The outcome of the investigation
will determine how the department will proceed in terms of Disciplinary action.
It is, however, getting the necessary attention,’’ said Bronagh Hammond, WCED
spokesperson.
On Thursday morning, frustrated parents protested outside the school.
Later in the day, Harvester Primary’s School Governing Body (SGB) said that the educator in question was employed by the SGB and not the WCED.
In a statement, the SGB said the alleged perpetrator has
handed in her resignation with immediate effect.
‘’She is no longer in the employ of the SGB. The matter
will be referred to the South African Council of Educators (SACE) for further
handling. A criminal charge has been lad and due process will follow.’’
But this is not an isolated incident as community members
recently held a protest at another Mitchells Plain school after a teacher was
reinstated following sexual abuse claims. The matter is before the court and
expected to resume in July.
