Man arrested in M/Plain after ''keeping a gun for a friend''

A 41-year-old man is expected to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates Court soon after he was caught with an illegal possession of unlicensed and stolen firearms and ammunition.

Police said the suspect alleged that he kept it for a friend.

‘’On Tuesday at about 14:30 members attached to Mitchells Plain SAPS were performing crime prevention duties in Compasberg, Tafelsig Mitchells Plain, an area infested with gang groupings, when a community member informed them of firearms and drugs being delivered at an identified address in the street. The members proceeded to the address where they ensued with a search of the premises. During the search, the members found two Glock pistols with ammunition and two magazines in bag on top of a cupboard in one of the rooms,’’ said Lt Col Malcolm Pojie, Western Cape police spokesperson.

‘’Further investigation revealed that one of the firearms was reported stolen in Parow during March 2020 and the other one in Durbanville during January 2024. In addition to the above, forces deployed on the ground have recovered three firearms on Monday, of which two in Beacon Valley and one in Portland, Mitchell’s Plain. This brings the confiscation of firearms in Mitchell’s Plain since Monday, to a total of nine and an assortment of different calibre ammunition,’’ he added.
