More than twenty suspects will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate's Court on Monday, following several shooting incidents that occurred in suburb last week, claiming at least five lives and leaving several others injured.
In a statement, Western Cape police said officers were divided
into teams and areas such as Beacon Valley, Tafelsig and Portlands were
targeted and several houses were searched.
‘’Since 14:00 on 03 July 2025 to 02:00 on 04 July 2025… a
total of 43 identified gang houses were searched. At one house, a licensed 9mm
Norinco pistol and ammunition were confiscated, and an inquiry was registered,’’
said Captain F.C. van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.
‘’Five firearms and an assortment of ammunition were
confiscated, and seven suspects aged between 17 and 46 were arrested for
possession of unlicensed firearm and possession of prohibited firearm and
ammunition. Fourteen suspects aged between 20 and 39 were arrested for murder
and attempted murder, and a 30-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal
possession of ammunition,’’ he added.
Police said multidisciplinary deployments have bolstered
their efforts to prevent further occurrences and to arrest those responsible
for these heinous acts.
‘’Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt. Gen. (Adv.) TE
Patekile commended the endeavours of the members and said that these operations
will continue until he is satisfied that the perpetrators are brought to book
and calm has been restored to the area,’’ said van Wyk.
