The City of Cape Town has condemned an attack on its firefighting crew, last night. The crew were returning to base in Belhar, after attending to a vegetation fire in Connaught Estate, when their vehicle was stoned.
‘’As the vehicle was traveling along 35th Street, between Bishop Lavis Drive and Robert Sobukwe, the driver saw someone standing along
the road in the vicinity of Malawi Camp. The next minute, a brick was hurled at
the vehicle, damaging the windscreen,’’ explained JP Smith, MMC for Safety
& Security.
The crew members were not hurt but reported the incident to
Bishop Lavis SAPS.
‘’This is but the latest senseless attack on our Fire and
Rescue Service – we are thankful that the crew was not physically hurt, but it
could have turned out so differently. Someone, somewhere knows the person
responsible for this incident and I urge them to please step forward so that
the perpetrator can face prosecution,’’ said Smith.
He said as a result, a fire engine will be out of
commission for repairs, hampering efforts as we head into the festive period
