Residents of ward 56 including Facreton, Kensington and Maitland, are planning to take to the streets on Sunday afternoon, for the second consecutive week. The march is against gangsterism, drugs and violence in the community.
Last weekend, 14-year-old Alnika Mitchell was shot and killed. Another victim survived the ordeal. Mitchell was laid to rest on Saturday.
Mitchell’s alleged killer made a brief appearance at the
Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday and the matter was postponed to next
Thursday. The 35-year-old, Milosh Basson, faces six charges, including the
murder of Alnika. He also faces charges dating back to 2023, including four
counts of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession
of drugs. During his appearance, he told the court he does not wish to be
represented by Legal Aid. The case has been postponed to allow him to apply for
legal representation.
Ward councillor, Cheslyn Steenberg, called on residents to
join Sunday’s march which is set to commence from the street Mitchell was
fatally shot – Lugmag Avenue & Ventura Street from 3p.m
