SASSA Introduces Digital Systems to Improve Services in Cape Town

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has launched new digital systems at its Bellville office in Cape Town to improve service delivery and reduce long queues.

The pilot program includes modern technology such as fingerprint and facial biometric systems, self-service kiosks, and an upgraded queue management system. Officials say these tools are already making a difference by cutting waiting times and helping more people each day.

Facial recognition is also being used for e-Life certification, a process that confirms grant beneficiaries are still alive. This system is linked to the Department of Home Affairs, helping to reduce fraud and prevent payments from being made to deceased individuals.

SASSA says its long-term goal is to allow people to apply for grants online without needing to visit offices in person. If successful, the system will be expanded to other parts of the country, making access to social grants faster and more convenient for millions of South Africans.
