ANC Welcomes Human Rights Investigation Into Ceres Education Crisis

 The African National Congress (ANC) in the Western Cape has welcomed an investigation by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) into allegations of human rights violations linked to the ongoing education crisis in Ceres.

The investigation comes amid concerns about the learning conditions facing children in the area, particularly learners from Nduli Primary School.

 

Learners from the school are currently attending classes at other schools because their own school premises have been deemed unsafe. The situation has raised concerns about the impact of the disruption on learners, educators and families.

 

The SAHRC's investigation will look into allegations that the ongoing education crisis may be affecting the rights of learners. Access to safe and suitable education facilities is an important part of ensuring that children can learn in a secure and supportive environment.

 

The ANC in the Western Cape says the situation requires urgent intervention from the provincial government.

 

ANC leader in the Western Cape Provincial Legislature Khalid Sayed has called on Education MEC Jaco Londt to resolve the crisis and ensure that learners can return to a safe and suitable school environment.

 

The relocation of learners to other schools has placed additional pressure on the education system, while families continue to seek answers about when a permanent solution will be found.

 

For learners, the issue goes beyond the condition of a school building. Prolonged disruptions can affect their education, routines and overall learning experience.

 

The SAHRC investigation could provide greater clarity on the circumstances surrounding the crisis and whether the rights of learners have been compromised.

 

The situation has also renewed calls for government to prioritise the maintenance and upgrading of school infrastructure, particularly where unsafe conditions put learners and staff at risk.
