Questions surrounding the handling of municipal funds in the Central Karoo District Municipality remain under the spotlight as the Western Cape Government's Section 106 forensic investigation continues.

The investigation is examining allegations that money raised on behalf of the municipality was not processed through the municipality's official bank accounts, raising concerns about financial governance and compliance with established municipal procedures.

At the centre of the investigation is a fundraising event held in Johannesburg, where the municipality reportedly raised R3 million. Investigators are seeking to determine how the funds were managed and whether the correct financial processes were followed.

The period under investigation coincides with the time when Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie served as mayor of the Central Karoo District Municipality. While the investigation has drawn attention to events during his tenure, it is important to note that the inquiry is aimed at establishing the facts surrounding the handling of the funds.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has urged full cooperation with investigators. DA spokesperson Dave Bryant says McKenzie should provide any information required to help bring the investigation to a conclusion, arguing that transparency is essential in resolving the matter.

Section 106 investigations are conducted under the Municipal Systems Act and are typically launched when there are allegations of financial misconduct, maladministration, or governance failures within a municipality. Their purpose is to establish the facts, determine whether any laws or regulations were breached, and recommend appropriate action if necessary.

The ongoing investigation highlights the importance of sound financial management in local government. Municipalities are entrusted with public resources to deliver essential services, and residents expect those funds to be managed responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with the law.

The outcome of the forensic investigation could have significant implications, not only for those directly involved but also for public confidence in local government institutions. Until the investigation is complete, many questions remain unanswered, and stakeholders across the political spectrum continue to call for a thorough and impartial process.

As investigators continue their work, communities in the Central Karoo will be looking for clarity, accountability, and assurance that public funds are protected and managed in the best interests of residents.
