Mbeki calls on political parties to honour promises
President Thabo Mbeki has urged all political parties to deliver on promises they made during the run up to the local government elections. Mbeki says all parties, regardless of the support they got, should live by the obligation of serving the people that elected them. Local government can only succeed if these promises are kept. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 2006 elections, Mbeki called on political parties in areas where there was no clear winner to cooperate to provide people with a better life. He also appealed for calm after violence flared in some areas before and after the election.
