Two people were killed and another injured when their 4x4 came under fire from the side of the road on Sunday.
Seven friends and relatives were travelling from Khatha to Kransdorp when they were ambushed.
The Mercury reports that the driver of the vehicle, who was not injured during the incident, tried in vain to get to a hospital.
The car developed problems because of the damage caused in the ambush, and it broke down.
Police Superintendent Joshua Gwala says the driver then discovered that Nokuthula Bhengu and Cebisile Xhakaza had died.
Sholiphi Jali, 60, and Basolile Ndlela, 35, were taken to Ntunjambili hospital at Kransdorp where they were treated of their injuries.
The driver is a taxi operator in Gauteng, but police have not linked the incident to taxi violence.
