The director of the NDPP Vusi Pikoli, has been suspended with immediate effect by President Mbeki. The decision was taken because of the irretrievable break down in the working relationship between the Minister of Justice and the NDPP.
"The President considers the relationship between the Minister and the NDPP central for the smooth functioning of the National Prosecuting Authority. The relationship breakdown also had adverse implications for the NPA and the functioning of the criminal justice system," says Government spokesman Themba Maseko.
The functioning and the role of the NDPP will be investigated. For now, the President has appointed Deputy National Director Mokotedi Mpshe as National Director so the work of the NPA can continue unhindered.
