Four employees of the city of Cape Town and a security guard have been caught stealing copper cable from a Council warehouse in Gugulethu.
Responding to a tip-off received from the community, the city’s non-ferrous metal theft task team, known as the “copperheads” raided the Electricity Department’s warehouse on the corner of Lansdowne Road and NY78.
“These people have been found to steal the cables that were intended for infrastructure that was to be put up in Brown’s Farm in Phillipi.
The city has lost an estimated R30 000 in the process, these people have been in court but have not pleaded yet. They are out on R500 bail and have been suspended with immediate effect,” says Chairperson of the Copperheads, Pieter van Dalen.
The City of Cape Town’s Copperhead unit wishes to thank the community and the constructive partnerships that they have with the scrap metal industry.
