In a dramatic incident at Dassen Island a juvenile whale has been rescued entangled in suspected crayfish ropes and nets.

“The South African Whale Disentanglement Unit, comprising Marine and Coastal Management (MCM), the Yzerfontein National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), Cape Nature Conservation and the Police Dive Unit, responded to approximately 1 nautical mile off-shore of Dassen Island,” says NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

According to Lambinon a one-year-old, Hump Back Whale was disentangled successfully using specialized whale disentangling equipment.

“Crayfish nets and rope were recovered from the scene and brought ashore,” says Lambinon.
