The 32-year-old man who had no heartbeat and stopped breathing after a near-drowning incident at Glencairn Beach last Thursday has made a remarkable recovery in a Cape Town hospital.
“His made a remarkable recovery from being brought out of the water where resuscitation efforts were attempted and then only much later in hospital was a heartbeat restored,” says National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
Lambinon says the man — who requested not to be named — remained in a critical condition and was placed on a ventilator to help him breathe.
“On Saturday he was taken off assisted breathing apparatus and by this morning (Monday) he is able to eat and swallow,” says Lambinon.
Last Thursday two men rescued the Glencairn man after witnessing him going for a swim. Later that day a shark-spotter saw a lifeless body floating and they attempted to rescue him.
The cause of the drowning has not yet been determined.
