Two separate sea rescues took place in Cape Town on Thursday, leaving one person in a serious condition in hospital.

In a desperate attempt, a Cape Town mother, swam out into the sea to rescue her 13-year-old son.

The incident occurred at the Yzerfontien Beach.

According to sea rescue officials the boy was on a surfboard when the mother swam out to save him.

“Once she reached him she stayed with her son, holding onto the surfboard in a very strong rip current. Two rescue swimmers arrived to help them to safety,” says National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson, Craig Lambinon.

“Both were treated for hypothermia and exhaustion and was taken to a local doctor,” says Lambinon.

In a separate incident

A man was brought out of the sea at Glencairn Beach, near Simon’s Town by two unknown men.

The 32-year-old man was reportedly found floating in the surf. The man was taken to hospital and is in a serious condition in hospital.

“We are appealing to the two men who brought him out of the water, to come forward to the NSRI,” says Lambinon.
