Cape Town International Airport is currently undergoing a transformation project totalling an infrastructural investment of R1.3 billion in a bid to ease overcrowding.

“We are currently building essential buildings which combine the processes for international and domestic passengers,” says spokesperson for Airport Company South Africa, Kim Webster.

CTIA processed 8.3 million passengers last year, 1.1 million more than the year before.

“It will have intergrated check-in and security points after which passengers will then split into international or domestic travel areas,” says Webster.

A second multi-story parkade consisting of five levels with approximately 4 000 additional parking bays is also being added.

Webster adds that the airport’s arrivals and departures will be transformed into a split level operation by means of an elevated roadway.

The construction is scheduled for completion by December 2009.
