The Western Cape cabinet has authorized a request by the Eden District Municipality, to declare the area as a local disaster region, after it was hit hardest by last year’s November floods.
It is estimated that the costs of the flood damage in the area stands, close to more R1 billion.
According to reports the extreme weather event resulted in severe damage to dams, municipal infrastructure, formal and informal housing, roads, equipment and crops.
Provincial Local Government Minister, Richard Dyantyi, says in a statement, that provincial cabinet supports the request.
