Zuma case on ANC’s agenda

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ANC is set to meet today to discuss the corruption charges hanging over the newly-elected party president, Jacob Zuma.

The NEC has made it a high priority to assess the issue at the first meeting to be held since the election of Zuma as party leader.

According to an Independent Online report, it is believed that the prosecution of Zuma could further divide the ANC and hurt his chances of succeeding President Thabo Mbeki as president of the country in 2009.

ANC spokesperson Tiyani Rikhotso says that the Zuma case is definitely going to be discussed at the NEC’s meeting.

“It is a matter of interest for the ANC if a president of the ANC is served with an indictment,” he says.

Rikhotso added that there is no reason for ANC supporters to be concerned about the discussion.

Zuma will be standing trial in August on charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering.
