The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) says it is shocked that yet another farmer is alleged to have brutally assaulted two farm workers. COSATU National spokesperson, Patrick Craven says that the farm workers were not just allegedly assaulted, but also chained to a roof overnight.
“What is unusual, but encouraging, is that when he (the farmer) called the security company, instead of them joining in the attack on the workers, they rescued the workers and took them to the police station,” says Craven.
He adds that when the farmer went to the police station to lay charges of theft against the workers, he was arrested and is currently in custody.
“We hope that this means that he (the farmer) will be dealt with according to the law. But if found guilty, will be punished severely, unlike some other farmers in rural areas who have been given incredibly light sentences for similar assaults on workers,” explains Craven.
